WCAG Versions
It is easy to get lost with the versions, so here is a simple overview to help you get it right.
Anyone who is even minimally involved in web accessibility has come across the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG).
There are different versions and standards, and often we will be asked to adhere to a particular one. In the timeline below, we can see which versions of the WCAG are currently available.
Note that the most recent versions follow the following structure: principle (X.), guideline (X.X) and success criterion (X.X.X). It is in the latter that we can apply techniques to meet the requirements that would be considered succesful.
- - Added 9 success criteria
- Highlighted the importance of the fields of 2.1
- Removed one success criterion (4.1.1 Parsing) - - Will focus on the functional needs of users
- Will cover far more than web
- Will include additional tests and different scoring mechanics
- - Added 17 success criteria
- Highlighted mobile accessibility, people with sight impairment and people with cognitive disadvantages
The issue of standards and versions is very interesting, you have to spend some time between hyperlinks to get it to settle in your mind.
I hope this little overview has helped you learn more about the WCAG process and versioning.
